Rockledge, MCC, Melbourne play for state tournament trips

Brevard County’s three high school baseball teams still alive in the FHSAA postseason will play Tuesday night with trips to the state tournament on the line.

The two teams met in the 2014 regional final round, and the Raiders defeated the Mavericks, 2-1, to end the Fort Lauderdale-area team’s streak of four consecutive state titles.They will include a game between two teams that have appeared in various spots in a number of national rankings this season. Rockledge will host Archbishop McCarthy at 7 in the Class 6A bracket.

Studstill delivers for Raiders in ninth

The day of baseball will begin at 4 p.m., when Melbourne Central Catholic hosts Sarasota Booker in a 5A regional final. The Hustlers last advanced to the state tournament in 2013, when they won the Class 3A championship.

Melbourne will play on the road in the Class 7A regional final round. The Bulldogs are at Gaither, also at 7 p.m. The 8-7A champions defeated Tampa Hillsborough last week, 9-2.

The state tournament will be played at Jet Blue Park in Fort Myers beginning Wednesday with 1A and 2A teams. Any Brevard qualifiers would not play before May 18.

Brevard high school products continue to sign with college athletic programs, including one advancing from junior college on to a major program.

Holy Trinity graduate and Eastern Florida State College player Kerry Sweeney signed with Ole Miss for men’s golf. Sweeney, a two-time FLORIDA TODAY Boys Golfer of the Year, was the 2015 NJCAA runner-up and first-team all-America.

Merritt Island Christian volleyball player Autumn Rudolph signed a letter of intent with the University of Mobile last week. Christian Smallwood of the MCC baseball team signed with the College of Central Florida in Ocala, and classmate Amanda Dalton with Point University of Georgia for lacrosse. At Eau Gallie, Jeremy Farley signed to play football for Aurora (Ill.) University.

Satellite holding community event

In conjunction with an intrasquad scrimmage by the football team on Friday, Satellite High is holding a community tailgate party in the Satellite Beach United Methodist Church parking lot. A $10 entry fee entitles residents to a plate of barbecue, games including a bounce house and admission to the 7 p.m. scrimmage. Those age 5 and under are free.

Physical offered for Melbourne students

Dr. Everett Schuyler DeJong and Health First Sports Medicine will offer free athletic physicals for Melbourne High students on May 23. The physicals will be given from 2:15 p.m. through 4:30 at the clinic at the corner of Nasa and Apollo.

Titusville grad scores in MEAC track finals

Xavier Walton, who competed for Titusville High last year, placed third in the 10,000 meters for Bethune Cookman on Thursday at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Greensboro, N.C. The freshman’s time was 32:52.00. Bethune Cookman won its third consecutive team title.
