Joey Lieb of Eau Gallie High boys soccer won the Community Credit Union FLORIDA TODAY Readers’ Choice Athlete of the Year award determined this week through online voting.
It was a dramatic come-from-behind victory for Lieb, who trailed Merritt Island wrestler Casey Jackson late Wednesday.

Joey Lieb was voted FLORIDA TODAY’s Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6.
For 32 weeks during the school year, FLORIDA TODAY held weekly Athlete of the Week voting.

For the past week, we pitted six of the top vote-getting male and female athletes from the 2015-16 season. A total of 9,743 votes were collected over the three-day period.
Lieb got 3,936 votes, which was 40.4 percent of those received. Jackson finished with 2,667, or 27.37 percent.
Third place was Rockledge track and field athlete Sterling Jenkins (1,061 votes), followed by Viera High softball/track and field athlete Kaitlyn Jensen (988 votes), Cocoa Beach football player David Demeter (805 votes) and MCC cross country runner Amanda Beach (296 votes).

During the season, Lieb scored a team-high 15 goals and assisted on five more. A junior, he has been named a captain for the 2016-17 year.
In Week 15, Lieb garnered more votes than any other athlete this season, collecting almost 1,500. His accomplishments during that week included his team grabbing three wins, with Leib scoring six goals and assisting on another. He had two goals each in a 4-2 win over Port St. Lucie, 2-0 win over Bayside and 7-1 win over Astronaut. Leib assisted on a third goal in the Port St. Lucie win.
