TITUSVILLE Both Heritage High and host Titusville got the chance to measure themselves against one of the state’s more successful programs on Tuesday in a spring football jamboree at Al Werneke Field.

In the three-team jamboree, the teams rotated against one another, and the 2015 Class 3A state runner-up Stallions of Delray Beach American Heritage got the better of both the Terriers and Panthers.

The Stallions won the first two periods against Heritage, 14-7, but it was a young Panthers player who quickly made a name for himself. Willie Gaines, playing at quarterback, ran for a 30-yard score to put Heritage on the scoreboard first.

Both Brevard County teams were sporting new faces at quarterback and running back. That included Gaines, who was at the spot after the graduation of Daeshawn Mills.

“Gaines played outstanding,” Panthers coach Mark Ainsley said. “He made the right reads. He threw it away when he could. He made some throws. The receiving corps did its job.”

In the final matchup of the night, Heritage beat Titusville, 14-0.

Brian Nieves closed out the scoring with a touchdown run for the Panthers. When those two periods ended, it signaled the final high school varsity sports action of the school year. Football practice for the 2016 season will begin Aug. 1.

“Some of the execution wasn’t great, but that’s fine,” Ainsley said. “That’s what you want to learn from, because nothing really matters until week one.”

American Heritage shut out Titusville, 3-0, in the second matchup.

“I’m pleased,” Terriers coach Wayne Lawrence said. “We’re missing some key weapons who will be back with us come fall. I’m not going to cry about who’s not here. I’m going to praise the guys who are here.”

Travious Williams, who showed explosiveness last season at running back, was among those he mentioned. Also at that position, he mentioned O.C. Brothers. Both Chade Gadapee and Chandler Hunt saw time at quarterback for the Terriers.
