Emily Sidor, Greg Durham and Santi Garcia each won individual singles matches on Monday, the first day of competition at the FHSAA tennis tournament.

Competition was spread around the Orlando area and resumes today with individual semifinals.

Sidor, seeded second in Class 2A individual girls singles, defeated Olivia Talbert of Ponte Vedra, 6-0, 6-2, in a quarterfinal match. She will face third-seeded Stephanie Taylor of Ft. Lauderdale Pine Crest when play begins at 8 a.m. at Sylvan Lake Park in Sanford. Semifinal winners will advance to bracket finals later in the day, and those winners will face the No. 1 singles winners from team play for the overall state championship.

Sidor and teammate Colleen Clay were eliminated from individual doubles, also on Monday. A year ago, she and sister Katie Sidor won their doubles bracket.

Cocoa Beach’s Santiago Garcia advanced through two rounds as an unseeded player in 2A boys individual singles. He defeated Ian Morrison of Lake Wales, 6-2, 6-2; and then fourth-seeded Daniel Lozier of Lynn Haven Mosley, 6-0, 6-3. His semifinal opponent Tuesday will be No. 2 Brandon Shanklin of Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy.

Durham soaring after adjustment period

Melbourne’s Greg Durham played at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs as the Class 4A second seed. In quarterfinal play, he defeated David Burns of Orange Park Fleming Island, 6-3, 6-1. He will face Isaac Nortei of Lakeland in Tuesday’s semifinal round.

Competitors in 3A and 1A will begin play Wednesday. Qualifiers from Brevard include Sasha Belaya of Viera in 3A along with Hunter Morris of Holy Trinity and Courtney Copeland of Edgewood in 1A. Belaya will team with Izzie Diaz in doubles, as will Morris with Matt Ryan. Ashleigh Kutryb and Morgan McCarthy of Holy Trinity will play 1A girls doubles.

The spring signing period for high school seniors to align themselves with college athlete programs began this week, and several Brevard County high school competitors took advantage of it.

Rockledge's Kaira Simmons (seated, center) signed with Ole Miss track & field on Wednesday

Rockledge’s Kaira Simmons (seated, center) signed with Ole Miss track & field on Wednesday

Five players from the Rockledge High girls lacrosse team, set to begin its FHSAA playoff run on Friday, gathered in the school’s auditorium, while classmate Kaira Simmons signed in the cafeteria to attend and compete for Ole Miss. Simmons was last year’s FLORIDA TODAY Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

Simmons holds the best performances among Brevard County high schools girls this year in the 200 meters, at 24.5 seconds; and the long jump, at 19 feet, 5 1/2 inches. The latter leads the state of Florida.

Ali Clemente, Maggie Johnson, Janey Johnson, Sage Hicks-Fredenburg and Aleena McCoy were the exception to the rule as five signees from the same team. Both Johnsons headed to Montevallo of Alabama, while Clemente signed with Concordia University of Illinois, Hicks-Fredenburg with the Merchant Marine Academy and McCoy with Erskin College of South Carolina.

Viera girls soccer No. 1 in national poll

Holy Trinity sisters Shelby and Sydney Smith committed themselves to the University of Chicago for cross country and track and field. Ryan Bastien signed with John Carroll for baseball, Noel Whitlock with the University of the South for diving and Audrey Wilson with UCF crew.

At Melbourne, two players from the Class 7A state semifinalist Bulldogs basketball team signed with Eastern Florida State: Noah Horchler and Logan Folsom. Mya Jackson signed with Florida Memorial women’s basketball.

Merritt Island girls win track title

Merritt Island’s girls team outscored host Sebastian River, 191.5-146, winning the District 13-3A track and field title on Wednesday.

Macie Monborne won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.86 seconds and the 300 hurdles (38.10). She also won the high jump, clearing 5-0.

Viera won the boys title, 184-135 over the Mustangs. Hawks event winners were Tre Nixon in the 100 meters (11.04 seconds), Jay Boyd (5-10 high jump), Nick Bandos with a season best pole vault of 14-6 and the 4×100 relay squad.

Belaya, Go advance in state tennis

Sasha Belaya of Viera won quarterfinal matches on Wednesday at the FHSAA state tennis tournament and will compete again Thursday when the tournament resumes at 8 a.m.

Belaya, the No. 1 seed in 3A individual girls singles, defeated Katherine Jakeway of Ponta Vedra Nease, 6-1, 6-1 in Altamonte Springs. She will meet Bin Zhing of Miami Doral in the semifinal round. Belaya is also teamed with Izzie Diaz in individual doubles, advancing to the semifinal round with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Pensacola Washington’s Emily Dawson and Abigail Lipnicky.

Go, the defending state champion and second seed in boys individual singles, beat Jacob Kennard of Tampa Hillsborough, 6-1, 6-0. He and Kevin Taylor also won in doubles, eliminating Land O’ Lakes’ Maxwell Keenan and Albert Xing, 6-1, 6-1.

Vote for this week’s Athlete of the Week

In Class 1A play in Sanford, Holy Trinity’s Hunter Morris was eliminated from individual singles by William Font of Boca Raton St. Andrews, 6-1, 6-0. Edgewood’s Courtney Copeland was defeated by Olivia Jablonski of Tampa Citrus Park Christian by the same score. Morris and doubles partner Matt Ryan fell to Ivan Esguerra and Brandon Stewart of Gainesville P.K. Yonge, also 6-1, 6-0. Ashleigh Kutryb and Morgan McCarthy were scheduled to represent Holy Trinity in girls individual doubles but will complete their match Thursday.

Rockledge holds third in overall state rankings

Rockledge High’s baseball team remained in third in the overall state poll produced by The Prep Zone this week, and the Raiders held the No. 2 spot in 6A. Merritt Island was No. 6 in the class.

Viera was third in 7A, while Melbourne received votes but did not crack the top 10 there. In 5A, Melbourne Central Catholic was No. 3.

According to the Miracle Sports statewide softball rankings, Viera was No. 5 in all classes and second in 7A. Rockledge High softball was sixth in the Class 6A poll. Both Astronaut and MCC received votes in 5A, and Covenant Christian held on to 10th in 2A.

Viera's Kaitlyn Jensen tearing up softball pitching

Viera High's Kaitlyn Jensen is FLORIDA TODAY's Athlete of the Week for Feb. 27-March 4.

Viera High’s Kaitlyn Jensen is FLORIDA TODAY’s Athlete of the Week for Feb. 27-March 4.

Kaitlyn Jensen isn’t the only athlete to play multiple sports. In fact, she isn’t the only athlete to play more than one sport in the same season.

It would be difficult, however, to find more than a few others who have been as dominant as the Viera High junior has been in two spring sports this year.

On the softball field, Jensen has homered 15 times, driven in more than 40 runs and batted .588. In track and field, she has the best marks for a Brevard County high school girl in two events: the discus (113 feet, 8 inches) and the shot put (38-2).

Vote for this week’s Athlete of the Week

When possible, she has competed in both on the same day. On March 31, she competed in the Cape Coast Conference track and field championship meet at Astronaut High and left in time to make Viera’s softball game against Space Coast that night. Her shot put of 38-2 won the CCC title, and she placed second in the discus (106-4).

“It’s no problem at all,” Hawks softball coach Dale Pierce said Tuesday. “I’ve got a great working relationship with (track and field coach) Dave Costello. It’s got to bother her some, but she seems to adjust to it.”

She had the chance to do both again on Wednesday, when Sebastian River hosted the District 13-3A meet and the Hawks softball team played its District 6-7A semifinal game at night. Jensen won the girls shot put with a season best 39-7 1/2 and the discus with a 109-7.

After a drive back to Viera to play Heritage, she hit her 14th and 15th home runs in an 11-0 win over the Panthers. The Hawks will play Harmony at Viera Regional Park Thursday at 7 p.m. for the district crown.

Jensen has credited her daily practice, a shortening of her swing and the lineup around her for her 13 homers.

“Having somebody before me and after me at the plate makes me more confident I can do the job,” she said.

Viera girls soccer No. 1 in national poll

Pierce added his own take.

“She’s gotten a lot stronger physically,” he said. “She’s confident, and the maturity level is a huge part of it.”

Jensen has set a pattern for the Hawks softball team, who have hit 25 homers as a group this year. She hit four in a tournament at Spruce Creek against a loaded field. That included two in the championship game against Winter Springs, won 7-2 by Viera.

The week before that, she was the Community Credit Union/FLORIDA TODAY Athlete of the Week for her two-sport success: three home runs in two softball games and two events won at the Phillip Dummer Elite Classic track and field meet hosted by Holy Trinity. She took the discus there by more than 10 foot (112-5) and won the shot put (35-5) as well.

All the while, she’s adjusted to a position shift, moving from shortstop to third base.

“All my life I’ve played shortstop, so it’s a big change,” she said. “My UCF coach, because I’m committed there, wants me to move to third. I’ve been practicing a lot.”

FHSAA lacrosse playoffs open Friday

Keegan Stinnett of MCC congratulates teammate Garrett Arnold after he scored during a game against Satellite.

When the Rockledge High girls lacrosse team went on the road last year and won an FHSAA playoff game, it may have been a surprise to statewide observers of the sport.

It likely was less of a suprise to the Raiders themselves. Despite only four years in existence as a program, they’ve now won back-to-back district titles and haven’t lost to a Brevard County opponent in more than two years.

The challenge for Rockledge before this year was that Vero Beach, the only program to ever win a girls state championship in Florida, was an early opponent on the bracket. That is no longer the case. Rockledge, the District 12 winner, begins play Friday at Timber Creek, champion of District 11, at 7 p.m.

“I expect it to be a good game, but I also expect that it’s a winnable game,” coach Paul Johnson said on Wednesday. He had just watched five of his players sign college scholarship papers, and more could do so in the near future.

The two boys teams from Brevard in FHSAA postseason play will meet each other. District 22 champion Melbourne Central Catholic will visit District 21 winner Viera at 7.

The Rockledge girls wouldn’t meet Vero Beach until the state title game, though Johnson warned there may be more dangerous girls teams this season. He is optimistic Rockledge can make its longest run ever in the postseason this year.

“It’s well within our skill set to do so,” he said. “This core group has the experience to settle down and play like they know how to play.”

College signings continue

Brevard athletes continued to sign with colleges on Thursday, the second day of the NCAA’s spring signing period.

Two Palm Bay basketball players signed papers in the afternoon. Alyssa Laudato with the College of St. Mary’s in Omaha, Neb. The guard averaged 11.6 points and shot 56 percent from the field.

Latrell Talley, who averaged a double-double for the Pirates at 11 points and 10 rebounds, will move across town to Eastern Florida State College.

A Melbourne High graduate, Abdul Sarki, signed from Daytona State College to join Charleston Southern’s Division I basketball program. He was part of the 2014 Bulldogs team that made the program’s first state tournament experience.

Isaiah Lopez, and all-Cape Coast Conference boys soccer player from Titusville High, signed on Wednesday with the University of West Florida.

In Indian River County, Covenant Christian played an early game but came home with a 10-0 loss in the District 4-2A final against host Master’s Academy of Vero Beach. The Lions still earned a regional playoff spot but will have to travel.

Astronaut finished the night late, but the War Eagles finished it with a different story. Despite three stoppages in play, they pulled out a 3-1 win over Space Coast in the District 9-5A title game.

“We’ve been knocking on the door the last three years,” Astroanaut coach Jeff Landers said. “I’m just really proud of them with the way they handled things. This senior class absolutely deserved to go out with a title.”

Viera’s Kaitlyn Jensen tearing up softball pitching

What they had to handle was an early deficit and a lightning detector that sent both teams for cover three times, including twice within minutes of each other.

Cocoa Beach, the tournament host, had won the last three district crowns. Next, the War Eagles will play at home in a regional quarterfinal on Wednesday. The Vipers will play on the road.

Space Coast took a 1-0 lead in the third, but the War Eagles tied the game in the fourth and then, after two short delays for lightning, scored the winning runs in the fifth. An error brought both Morgan Gyure and Melanie Jones home. Gyure had singled and moved to third on a double to center field by Jones.

At Eau Gallie, Merritt Island and Rockledge played one out shy of a complete seven innings, but lightning interrupted the game there with no score. After an extensive delay, the top-seeded Raiders prevailed, 1-0.

Harmony and Viera will play Monday at Viera Regional Park at 7 p.m.

Viera High junior Sasha Belaya won the Class 3A girls individual singles tennis title on Thursday at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.

Belaya, the top seed, defeated second-seeded Geetha Velusamy of Tarpon Springs East Lake, 6-2, 6-3. She had begun her day with a 6-4, 6-1 semifinal win over Bin Zheng of Miami Doral.

Belaya was also playing with teammate Izzie Diaz in the doubles final in the late afternoon. The two beat Gabriela Castello and Katherine Jakeway of Ponte Vedra Nease,  4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1) to win that title.

Merritt Island’s Albert Go, the 2015 overall 2A state boys champion, fell in the semifinal round of 3A individual singles on Thursday to Tom Jaworski of North Miami Morning, 6-3, 6-4. Morning went on to win the title.

The previous FHSAA practice of having the individual singles champion — a bracket of the state’s No. 1 singles district champions — play the No. 1 singles bracket winner from team competition, was discontinued. Go won that match last year, only the third Brevard player to do so.

In Class 1A girls individual doubles at Sylvan Lake Park in Sanford, Holy Trinity’s Ashleigh Kutryb and Morgan McCarthy were defeated by Annalise Klopfer and Gabriela Pinero of Clearwater Central Catholics, 6-3, 6-3.

Logan Folsom of Melbourne (11) drives past Blanche Ely player Jamari Smith (2) during the Class 7A state basketball final in Lakeland.

Melbourne High’s Logan Folsom was one of two players on his team and one of four from Brevard County recognized by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches on all-state teams announced this week in coordination with Source Hoops.

Folsom was on the five-member Class 7A first team, while Noah Horchler, also a Bulldogs senior, made the third team. In February, the pair helped lead Melbourne to its second state tournament appearance. Folsom also played for the school’s first state-tournament team in 2014.

In the state semifinal game, Folsom led a comeback effort that fell just short against eventual state titlist Blanche Ely, 62-59. Folsom led the Bulldogs with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Horchler scored 14 and grabbed a team-high 11 boards.

On Wednesday, both signed with Eastern Florida State College.

Melbourne seniors lead team to next round

Titusville’s Shevelle Bailey earned third-team recognition in Class 5A. The senior helped the Terriers to their third consecutive playoff appearance this year. Last year, he was a member of Titusville’s first district championship team in 25 years. Bailey recently signed with McCook (Neb.) Community College after averaging 10.7 points and eight rebounds this season.

Josh Porteus of Holy Trinity was the fourth honoree from Brevard. Porteus, third-team in 4A, led the Tigers to their second consecutive appearance in the state tournament, where Holy Trinity finished as the state runner-up. For the season, Porteus averaged 16.4 points and 5.2 assists.

VIERA Sometimes, everything is clicking. That’s how it went for the Viera High softball team on Monday.

The Hawks (24-1) rolled to a 15-0 District 6-7A championship victory over Harmony at Viera Regional Park.

“The adrenaline was pumping,” Viera senior Sydney Brooks said. “Being here for four years and having the district championship at our fingertips, to finally get it was awesome. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Brooks went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in four runs. Kiana East, who picked up her 20th pitching win, also went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs. Zoie Hatley and Ali Loyd each added two RBIs as well.

Kaitlyn Jensen drove in two runs with one swing, but the Longhorns had their chance to prevent it. She hit a low popup along the first base line that hit the ground between two Harmony fielders. Her plate appearance extended, she sent the next pitch over the right center field fence, her 16th home run of 2016.

This week’s high school playoff events

“We couldn’t have hit the ball better than what we did tonight,” Hawks coach Dale Pierce said. “Our defense is playing well, too. We’re playing better defense than we did last year.”

That will be key beginning Wednesday, when the Hawks host New Smyrna Beach in regional play.

About a mile away, Melbourne Central Catholic’s boys lacrosse team won its first-round play-in game against Viera, 21-7. Quinn Lowdermilk and Garrett Arnold each scored five goals, and Kegan Stinnett contributed four more.

The Hustlers will host the Benjamin School on Wednesday at 7 in the next round.

The Rockledge girls lacrosse team exited the playoffs on Friday with a 6-4 loss at Timber Creek.

ROCKLEDGE The Merritt Island High baseball team skirted the razor-thin edge between making the FHSAA regional tournament and facing the end of the season on Tuesday, pulling out a 3-2 win over Eau Gallie in the bottom of the seventh inning in the District 13-6A semifinal round.

The win earned the Mustangs a shot at the district title, to be awarded Thursday at Space Coast Stadium, and it also guaranteed them a game next week.

“Any time you’re playing (Commodores coach) Bob Collins, you know you’re going to be in for a good game,” Merritt Island coach Greg Plecki said. “Every time we play those guys, we’re battling. It makes a fun game.”

It was a fun ending for junior Jacob Bogle, who delivered the winning hit, one of his two in the game. Merritt Island improved to 20-6 and will play the winner of the late game between Bayside and Rockledge.

Jacob Barrett also had two hits for Merritt Island, and Connor Allen doubled. The Mustangs stranded 11 runners in the game. Jack Gallo and John Ambers hit doubles for the Commodores.

At Space Coast, Holy Trinity defeated the Vipers, 5-3, in one District 9-5A game, while Satellite beat Astronaut, 7-1. In that game, Zack Kornick struck out nine War Eagles in six innings.

Blake Beyel doubled twice, driving in two runs in Cocoa’s home 9-1 win over Cocoa Beach. At Melbourne Central Catholic, the Hustlers ended Titusville’s season in a five-inning, 10-0 win. MCC got triples from Austin Nickle and Jackson Taylor, and Mark Potter doubled.

In Wednesday’s semifinals at Satellite, Cocoa will face the Scorps, while the Tigers will play the Hustlers.

With an 8-1 win at Harmony, Melbourne earned a spot in Thursday’s District 6-7A final. The Bulldogs will face Viera, a 6-1 winner over Heritage. Christian Robinson homered and drove in three runs for the Hawks. Bryson Wallace improved to 4-0, pitching a complete game and allowing just one hit.

TITUSVILLE The girls track and field team from Rockledge High set a new standard for dominance on Wednesday. Not satisfied with simply doubling its nearest opponent’s score, the Raiders almost tripled it.

It was a day of comfortable wins for several Brevard County high school teams opening or continuing postseason runs. For the Rockledge girls, their District 13-2A title was No. 5 in a row, this time by a 214-87 margin over runner-up Lincoln Park at Astronaut High.

Back on the Raiders’ campus, the softball team needed just four innings for a 15-0 win over Port St. Lucie in 6A regional play. Rockledge and Merritt Island, a 2-1 road winner over Suncoast of Riviera Beach, will meet again on Tuesday.

“This team can control their own destiny,” softball coach Michael Inman said. “We’ve got talent. We’ve got a pitching staff. We’ve got great defense, and our bats are starting to wake up again. That’s what we need. We need to start scoring some runs.”

Viera softball advanced in 7A with a 6-0 win over New Smyrna Beach. It did not go as well for Astronaut, which lost at home to McKeel, 7-2. Space Coast also fell, 2-1 at Hardee.

Also at the Astronaut track, the Satellite boys made it back-to-back in the district. Tommy Heideman set a personal record in the discus by 12 feet, winning that event at 164 feet, 5 inches. He also took the shot put (50-0 1/2).

Kaira Simmons was a candidate for star of the day. The Ole Miss signee and Rockledge senior won the long jump, triple jump, 200 meters and ran a leg of the winning 4×400-meter relay. Her long jump of 20 feet, 1 1/4 inch was the best of the year by a Brevard girl. So was her 200, a win in 24.46 seconds.

Jeremy Lawson of Cocoa came within an inch of his season best and three inches within his lifetime best long jump, clearing 23-6. He also won the triple jump (45-8 3/4) and the 400 (49.01). Astronaut’s Tristan Schultheis repeated what has rarely been done by a Brevard high jumper, clearing 7 feet in his district win.

One baseball district, 9-5A, staged its semifinal games. Melbourne Central Catholic defeated Holy Trinity, 7-2, and host Satellite won 3-0 over Cocoa. The two will meet Thursday at 7.

In boys lacrosse, Melbourne Central Catholic lost its playoff game to Benjamin School, 12-7.

Astronaut, Rockledge win district softball titles

When Viera High’s District 6-7A softball final against Harmony was postponed in the afternoon due to approaching storms, it was a sign of the night ahead.

Two Brevard County high school seniors were among 24 from around the state named to the FHSAA Academic All-State team for the 2015-16 year.

Max Diaz of Melbourne Central Catholic and Hannah Lyons of Cocoa Beach will be honored at a June 13 banquet in Gainesville where they will be presented with $1,350 scholarships. One boy and one girl from among the 24 will win an additional scholarship of $3,800. The FHSAA program is in its 22nd year, and team members are chosen based on their academic performance, athletic participation, community involvement and an essay.

Diaz, a cross country runner who also competes in track and field, has a personal best time of 17:41 over 5,000 meters. He plans to attend the University of Florida, and his academic interests lie in prosthetics and regenerative medicine.

That doesn’t mean he won’t continue to pursue sports, which have played a significant role in his ability to maintain high academic standards and a full schedule.

“For me, the secret is running,” Diaz said. “Even if I’m fatigued from the day mentally, I can clear my head and come home with a fresh mind after running.”

Diaz, a 4.0 student and ranked first in his class, is a member of several honor societies, including National Honor Society, and is active in student government. His more than 670 hours of community service are with organizations including Sonata Retirement Home and the Ascension Catholic School music program.

Merritt Island’s Monborne voted Athlete of the Week

Lyons has competed in cross country, soccer and lacrosse for Cocoa Beach, where she is the valedictorian. She described herself as “overly competitive,” something that has come through in the classroom and in sports.

“I’ve always been pretty dedicated to my studies,” she said. “I love the discipline of sports and the camaraderie of teams.”

The 4.0 student is president of the National Honor Society, an A.P. Scholar with Distinction, treasurer of student government and a member of several clubs, and the robotics team. She has more than 700 hours of community service, including with Cape Canaveral Hospital, the FIT Scott Center for Autism and Malaria No More Foundation.

Lyons will decide between Wake Forest, Rice and the University of Florida, with pre-med plans. She may also compete in club lacrosse.
