Astronaut High principal on hiring new football coach

Astronaut High principal Krista Miller faced what she described as “a huge loss for our school and community” on Monday as 19-year head football coach Randy Hallock announced he will retire from that position after the 2016 season. Now she faces the task of finding the next coach.

“Our goal is going to be to try to hire someone by the new year,” she said Monday, “but we’re not going to force it just to get it done by then. We want to make sure it’s the right fit.”

Hallock’s teams have won 231 games and made 13 trips to the playoffs, including finishing as the 2000 Class 3A state runner-up. Miller said she “couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated, passionate, involved and caring head coach,” but now her task is to find the next War Eagles leader.

Hallock was the fifth head coach since the school opened in 1972. The War Eagles will play their final game of the season at home against Space Coast on Nov. 4.

Brevard players advance to state golf

The Viera High girls advanced to the Class 3A state golf tournament by winning the Region 6 tournamnent at Royal St. Cloud by 27 strokes. Manon Donche-Gay shot an even-par 72 to tie for the low individual score. Viera’s team score was 304.

Bryan Lanza of Rockledge High earned a spot in the Class 2A state golf tournament with his performance on Monday in the Region 4 event. Lanza shot 75, placing him in a tie for fifth at Dubsdread Golf Club in Orlando. Cocoa’s Dayna Owens also advanced. She shot 77 to place third among all girls. The Tigers team finished fourth, as did the Titusville boys.

Melbourne alumni invited to event

Graduates of Melbourne High are welcome at a Friday reception in the school’s auditorium beginning at 5 p.m.

The gathering will last until the kickoff of the homecoming game against Bayside at 7 in McIntyre Stadium.

Eau Gallie baseball holding golf tournament

The fourth annual fundraising golf tournament for the Eau Gallie High baseball program is Oct. 30 at Mallards Landing in Melbourne.

The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. and feature a shotgun start. The entry fee is $65 and includes range balls, a cart, greens fee, lunch and a goody bag. A hole-in-one could win a truck. Contact Marizza Benton at 321-759-9111 or egdugoutclub@gmail.com.
