A 99-yard drive highlighted the night for the Merritt Island Christian football team, but lightning took control in the end at Colonial High in Orlando.

The Cougars built a two-touchdown lead in the first half against Faith Christian on Thursday but trailed, 17-14, when lightning forced the game to be called at 7:27 of the third quarter.

“I was impressed with our guys playing together and driving the ball,” new head coach Jamie Bopp said. “It was a great football game, back and forth.”

The MIC defense recovered a Faith Christian fumble at the 1 in the second quarter, and Steven Williams scored from the 5 on the other end to make it 14-0.

“He had some big runs for us and converted a fourth down,” Bopp said. “He’s going to be a leader for us in the fall.”

The Cougars, with 18 players, fumbled in the red zone just before the game was called.

“We were getting turnovers on defense, moving the ball on offense, making our extra points,” Bopp said. “We got off to a great start.”

Brice Bowman scored MIC’s first touchdown, from the 3-yard line in the first quarter.
